Launchpad
The more I read about Launchpad, or Canonical’s plans generally, the more uneasy I get. They don’t necessarily seem committed to free software: Launchpad is not free, and one worries about the “single point of failure” problem. Then again, Launchpad is much, much easier to use than, say, Bugzilla, and the free-software movement desperately needs usability at this stage of its life. (Actually, come to think of it: Debian’s bugreport program is probably the easiest and best bug-tracking program I’ve used so far: without the user doing anything, it submits all the information from that user’s system which might be relevant to the bug report he’s submitting.)
Today a Debian developer chimes in with some thoughts on Launchpad. I definitely think Mark Shuttleworth needs to calm the masses and explain his company’s business model, then take the step that would actually put his money where his mouth is — namely, licensing Launchpad under the GNU General Public License or something similar.
