Narnia

The first hour was great.

The second hour was wretched. It completely forgot everything that made the first part great. In particular, it completely dropped any interest that it had in Lucy, played by the remarkable 10-year-old actress Georgie Henley. She completely drew me into the movie, and they forgot about her. In the interest of adhering to mindless clichés, they elevated Peter to a general and a king with almost no segue, and skipped over the small matter of Edmund’s treachery because they had to move on to the next thing. And of course they had an interminable battle scene. And a bunch of swooping crane shots borrowed from The Lord of the Rings.

Had they stopped it after the first hour, I would have been totally content. Alas. 2.5 stars.

  1. darling, have you not read the book? The book really does “skip over” Edmund’s treachery…and Peter really is just made a King — no “earning his stripes” or anything. That’s just how the story goes. We saw the movie last night — I thought they had excellent adherence to the important plot lines; the actors were excellent (Lucy, Tumnus, the White Witch, Edmund — I wasn’t as crazy about Peter and Susan, but hey, I didn’t really like them in the books either…..) I give it a very strong 4 out of 5 (the battle scene was a little long; some of the acting could have been brought up to par….)

  2. I read the book when I was in third or fourth grade, but I didn’t remember a bit of it — except for the fact that Turkish Delight was involved.
